I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine not long after acquiring my laser scanner that i thought would be worth a share with others out there. Especially folks looking to use 3D scan data but not yet convinced of the potential benefits.
My friend is a project manager and business owner who works across most states and territories in Australia and is looking to expand. When he found out I had purchased a laser scanner he was very interested to see firsthand how it all worked and what could be done with the data. As he works in a different state to me, we hooked up a web conference, so i could show him some example data sets, and naturally I told him all about the advantages from the design and drafting perspective. I waxed lyrical about how we could help him reduce his cost and lead times with regards to his design and drafting team and their deliverables. How it would reduce trips and costs for site visits etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. At the end of it all he said, I can see some pretty big advantages to my project managers to.
“What do you mean?” I asked
His reply was along the lines of; “Well, if everyone in my team can have access to the data via Recap, which is free, I can see huge use for it in collecting data from the office instead of going to site. There is enough detail in these scans that you can see power points, valves, pipe colours, fixings and fittings. Our project managers could interrogate the cloud to collect information on standard site fittings and fixtures, correlate how many fixtures and fittings there are that they need to upgrade, if there is enough power in the area they are working in and where they might need to run power from, all sorts of things! Without ever leaving the office.” He continued “There is potential for use with damage disputes. If a contractor has damaged something during installation and they try and say they didn’t do it, we can look back at the point cloud and confidently say, “It wasn’t there before you were the only ones with access to the area.” And that’s just the stuff I have thought of while we have been talking.”
“So how does this pay off for you then?” was the next obvious question.
“What it will help us do is optimize our time spent on site”. He replied. “We will be able to put together a list of what we think is there before setting foot on site and then spend a short amount of time confirming that instead of a long time searching for it. I can see that this would be a far easier and faster way to work. Especially, where the site has dangerous or restricted access areas, heavy traffic that could be dangerous to someone intently looking for or at something and momentarily forgetting where they are. This would make the work for my team safer. The big payoff is all of this translates to savings for my client, which makes us look a lot better in their eyes and ultimately could win us more work with them. Not to mention that, with the 360 degree viewing in the point cloud, I could have one guy on site and one in the office, on the phone to each other, one looking at the real world and one at the point cloud, but both seeing the exact same thing. Meaning there will be no need for sending “just one more photo”, because the photo at the office doesn’t quite go over far enough.”
As my friend works across multiple states and territories in lots of different industries, and often in remote areas, he sees these savings in site visits as one of the biggest advantages to the point cloud data for everyone in his team, not just the designers. That’s not to say that people wouldn’t need to go to site at all, but it will certainly reduce the amount of time spent on site and increase the amount of productive time in the office.
Since that meeting, I have been trying to think of all the other potential uses outside the typical design, drafting and visualization fields. As such, I try to ask as many people as I can what they think they could use scan data for if they had it.
I ran into a quantity surveyor at a recent networking event that said he was interested in using high definition scans to get detail out of for everything from wall, floor and ceiling areas, building material types, even line markings in carparks. He was very excited at the prospect of being able to put together a comprehensive list of site details without having to go to the site every day. Having those details on hand for the next time his client needs something done was also going to be a huge advantage he said. He thinks he could use the existing point cloud to get an idea of what he thought his client would need, get rough quotes and then go to site once, with this information confirm what he has and what needs to be amended and then update his information as required. His thoughts were that it could be used in teardowns of existing facilities and infrastructure as much as refurbishments because he could calculate exactly what services he would need for the teardown and how much could be recycled, reused and what he would need to allow to be paid for with regards to disposal.
So why is this saving time on site such a big deal? Let’s break down a site visit a little to see how much time can be saved in reality. To keep it simple, we will make the following assumptions;
1) The person attending site is named Bob.
2) Bob arrives on site at their normal start time for work.
3) Bob only needs to be on site for 4 hour to do what he needs and then can return to the office.
4) The site is only a 30 minute drive from the office.
5) Bob works a standard 8 hour day. Starting at 0800hrs (8am), knocking off at 1700hrs (5pm), allowing 1 hour for lunch, 1200-1300hrs (12pm-1pm).
6) No scanning has been done on the site.
7) Bob has been to site a couple of times in the past and is free to roam as required to gather information.
With these assumptions in mind, let’s have a look at the breakdown of a standard workday.
0800 hrs (8am)
Bob arrives to site. Bob would typically do the following;
Sign in. Go to the hot desk provided. Get his laptop set up.
It is first thing in the morning, so Bob needs a coffee. While having his coffee he checks his emails to see if there are any requests for him to get others in the office information while on site. There are no requests at this point. Assuming Bob is relatively efficient, this takes approximately 30 minutes.
0830 hrs (8:30am)
Bob goes out into the site to do his first round of information gathering/checking
1030 (10:30am)
Bob returns to his desk to enter his data and check emails. Still no requests for further information from the office.
1200 (12pm)
Lunch time.
1300 (1pm)
Bob goes back out into the site to check a few things he missed and get one last bit of information.
1315 (1:15pm)
Bob returns to his desk and to pack up and go back to the office and see an email asking him to check some details while there and ask the site contact to clarify some information.
1330 (1:30pm)
Bob goes to check the detail and finds it requires a permit to enter the area. Bob goes to fill out the permit and return to the area after everything is signed off. Bob does the checks, gets the information required and goes and signs off the permit.
1430 (2:30pm)
Bob now has to find his site contact to confirm some information. Bob discovers his site contact is in a meeting, but due to be out of the meeting in 5 minutes, so waits to confirm the information before leaving.
15 minutes later the contact is out of the meeting .
After a 45minute conversation and walk around site with the contact Bob has all the information he needs from site and is now ready to leave.
1530 (3:30pm)
Bob leaves site to head for the office, which should be an easy 30 minute drive, when he gets to the local school area and realizes it is school pick up time hell! His 30 minute drive becomes a 45minute drive.
1615 (4:15pm)
Bob Arrives back at the office. By the time bob gets to his desk (with another coffee and biscuit to calm his nerves from the horrors of having to go through a school area at pick up time) he has just enough time to hand over the information he checked for someone else on site, transfer some files back to the server, then pack up and head home.
1700 hrs (5pm)
To be honest I think we are just starting to scratch the surface of what can be done with Scan data and I would be very interested to know if anyone else has any uses for it outside of the design and drafting fields. Please share below in the comments.
